The Need for Rigid PCBs

Rigid printed circuit boards are used in almost all types of electronic equipment. For example, they are used in commercial and consumer electronic equipment like audio amplifiers, televisions, communication sets, air conditioners, personal computers, desktop computers, automobiles, and many more.
Some important specifications for rigid PCBs include the material of which they are made (substrates), number of layers, total thickness, copper weight, physical dimensions, surface finish, and whether they are RoHS or not.
The first step in our manufacturing process involves obtaining the films for all the layers and procuring the substrate material. Broadly, we use the following steps:
- We prepare the core of the board using a suitable glass-epoxy layer and sandwich it with the specified copper clad substrate material.
- We then transfer the innermost circuit design on the copper layers using lithographic methods.
- We then drill the necessary holes for vias and through hole components.
- Unwanted copper is then removed by etching.
- We electroplate the core and the holes to form the vias.
- Subsequent layers of copper clad material are prepared, and circuit design for these layers are transferred.
- We then drill these layers and etch them.
- After plating them to prepare the vias, we bond the individual layers to the core.
- The entire board is covered with solder resist leaving only the pads to be soldered.
- These pads are then covered with surface finish to protect the exposed copper from tarnishing.
- Any text to be written on the PCB is screen printed with a silk screen.
- PCBs are then packed and shipped.
